Daniel McClaine Jr., a freshman at Poston Butte High School in Tan Valley, Ariz., posted a picture of an AK-47 lying on a flag on his school-issued computer, KNXV-TV reports. The student had found the photo on the Internet.
The student originally was suspended for three days, but the punishment was lifted after Daniel's father contacted the local media.
"To me it's ridiculous. Three days for a picture? It wasn't like he was standing in front of the school holding the gun," Daniel McClaine Sr. told KNXV. "He should have got a warning. He shouldn't have ever been suspended. Not for something so frivolous."
The district policy states students are prohibited from "sending or displaying offensive messages or pictures" and cannot access information that is considered "harassing, threatening, or illegal."
The freshman said he read the guidelines but does not consider the picture threatening to anyone, KNXV reports.
