SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. (AP) - A staff sergeant with the Army National Guard has died after apparently suffering cardiac arrest during a training exercise at California’s Camp Roberts.

Guard officials said in a statement that 41-year-old Raul Escobedo exhibited symptoms of heart attack Wednesday night. His fellow soldiers tried to revive him before he was flown to a San Luis Obispo hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The statement says Escobedo had experienced chest pains earlier in the evening and was examined at a hospital and released.

A resident of Fullerton, Escobedo served as an operations noncommissioned officer for the 40th Infantry Division.
