Sylvia Mathews Burwell, President Obama’s pick to replace Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius, got a boost from a key Republican source Wednesday as she sat down for her second grilling on Capitol Hill.

Sen. Tom Coburn, Oklahoma Republican, said he will support Mrs. Burwell because she has small-town common sense and the ability to listen to a diverse set of viewpoints.

“She’s competent,” he told the Senate Finance Committee from the witnesses’ desk.

Mrs. Burwell, if confirmed, will be the new face of Obamacare. The law has been the GOP’s number-one target for more than four years, but Mrs. Burwell’s reputation as a competent leader of the White House’s budget office appears to be paying off.

Republican senators have used her confirmation hearings to levy attacks against the health care overhaul, but not the nominee personally, signaling a smooth path to confirmation.
