HILYARD TOWNSHIP, Ill. (AP) - Macoupin County authorities say a 66-year-old Missouri man has died after the two-person plane he was flying crashed in a southwestern Illinois cornfield.

The county coroner’s office said Thomas Huebbe of St. Charles, Missouri, died in the crash Sunday. Investigators say Huebbe was returning to St. Charles from a trip to Taylorville with his 35-year-old son, John Huebbe.

Investigators say the father tried to land in a harvested cornfield when the plane experienced a mechanical failure. The plane flipped onto its roof as it came to a stop.

The younger man was able to walk to a farmhouse for help. He was taken to an area hospital. An autopsy is scheduled for the father.

The Federal Aviation Administration and local authorities responded to the scene.
