NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (AP) - Construction has started on the Navy’s next aircraft carrier.
A keel-laying ceremony was held Saturday at Newport News Shipbuilding for the USS John F. Kennedy. It’s the second carrier to be named after the 35th U.S. president.
Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe was among those at the event. Kennedy’s daughter, Caroline Kennedy, gave a videotaped speech.
Caroline Kennedy’s initials were welded onto a steel plate that will be permanently affixed to the ship. She is the sponsor of the ship.
