Red Cross trailer unveiled in New York to respond to stranded pets during disasters
NEW YORK (AP) - The American Red Cross wants to make sure pets don’t get stranded if the New York area goes through another disaster like Superstorm Sandy.
The Red Cross and the American Kennel Club unveiled a trailer Saturday that would make it easier to rescue animals in the aftermath of tornadoes, floods, wildfires and other natural or civil disasters.
The $22,000 cost of the vehicle plus supplies is covered by the American Kennel Club and AKC Reunite, a nonprofit pet identification and recovery service. The trailer is part of a national program called the AKC Pet Disaster Relief.
The trailer is equipped with cages to deliver to shelters to accommodate pets separated from their owners during natural or civil disasters.
The club also is paying for similar moveable vans in other states.
Beyond dogs and cats, the trailer can accommodate turtles, parrots and other animals.
Red Cross officials say the trailer will shorten the response time for stranded animals.
The vehicles also deliver essentials such as cleaning supplies and animal care items, plus microchips, bowls, collars and leashes.
“Pets are a part of our families, and they should be part of our family emergency plans,” said Joseph Esposito, commissioner of the city’s Office of Emergency Management.
