ROYAL OAK, Mich. (AP) - Family and supporters of a 26-year-old immigrant have embarked on a 17-mile walk as they call for his release from a Battle Creek facility.

The Detroit Free Press (https://on.freep.com/1f4d0R3 ) reports Jose Adolfo Zaldana of El Salvador was detained at his home in Troy last year and has asked to be granted asylum. His family says he’ll face violence from gangs if he’s deported.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement says Zaldana came to the U.S. illegally and has been convicted of a drug felony.

A group of about 40 people began their walk Wednesday at the National Shrine of the Little Flower in Royal Oak. They plan to continue Thursday, stopping at churches in Ferndale and Detroit before ending with a rally at the Immigration and Customs Enforcement office in Detroit.
