WALDWICK, N.J. (AP) - A grand jury has decided against charging a truck driver in the traffic accident that claimed the life of a police officer in northern New Jersey last year.
Bergen County Prosecutor John Molinelli said that the grand jury decided Tuesday not to indict 31-year-old Ryan Cumberbatch, of Brooklyn, New York, on vehicular homicide charges.
Waldwick Patrolman Christopher Goodell was operating radar to look for speeders in July 2014 when Cumberbatch’s tractor-trailer rear-ended the 32-year-old’s unmarked patrol car. The truck pushed the vehicle into a retaining wall.
Cumberbatch is charged by motor vehicle summons with reckless driving and failure to maintain a proper lane. That case will be heard in Waldwick municipal court.
Goodell was a five-year veteran of the force. He’s survived by his family and a fiancee.
