SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - A former Unified Police detective has been sentenced to two years of probation and ordered to pay restitution in connection to $8,500 he could not account for.
The Deseret News reports (https://bit.ly/1Vu1fXn ) that 49-year-old Kenneth Callahan pleaded guilty in August to a reduced charge of misusing public money, a felony, for mishandling money meant for drug investigations.
Callahan’s attorney says untreated depression caused the detective to procrastinate doing paperwork and improperly log resources he was using.
At his sentencing Friday, Callahan was remorseful. He apologized to the department and the public he served. He resigned in April after working for the police agency for nearly 20 years.
The judge agreed to revisit Callahan’s case in a year with the possibility of reducing the charge from a felony to a misdemeanor.
