PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Rhode Island State Police say a man has died after he tried to cross a highway and was hit by a car.

Police say 20-year-old John Mota, of West Warwick, was struck on Route 295 South in Cranston shortly before 3 a.m. Sunday.

Police say Mota was in a car driven by his brother and they stopped in the breakdown lane.



Police say Mota exited and began to cross the highway toward the passing lane.

Police say he was struck in the passing lane by a car.

Mota was pronounced dead at the scene. His brother wasn’t injured.

The driver of the car that hit Mota was treated for minor injuries.

Police didn’t say why Mota was walking in the highway.

The accident is under investigation.
