SHIPPINGPORT, Pa. (AP) - The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection says FirstEnergy Corp. can ship coal ash from a Shippingport power plant to a site in the state’s southwestern corner.

Environmentalists have fought against the plan which the (Washington) Observer-Reporter (https://bit.ly/1QZ8z6P ) says was approved late last month.

The Akron, Ohio-based plans to ship 2.5 million tons of coal ash per year by barge from the Bruce Mansfield plant to a 107-acre dump at the company’s now-shuttered Hatfield Ferry Power Plant in Greene County.

FirstEnergy currently sends Bruce Mansfield plant waste to the Little Blue Run coal ash impoundment on the Pennsylvania-West Virginia border. The company will no longer be allowed to pump waste there after December 2016 because of its impending closure.

DEP spokesman John Poister says the company’s application was “investigated thoroughly” before it was approved.
