PHOENIX (AP) - State child welfare officials say they investigated reports that a 2-year-old Phoenix girl had been abused more than a month before she was found dead.

Department of Child Safety Director Greg McKay said in a statement Wednesday that there’s no indication his investigator did anything wrong when they investigated the allegations in mid-July with Phoenix police. He did not provide details of the allegations.

Police Sgt. Trent Crump says the little girl was found unresponsive and died at a hospital. Officers were called out to the home near 107th Avenue and Indian School around 10:30 a.m. Tuesday.

The agencies are jointly investigating to determine if foul play was involved.

Crump did not identify the girl or describe the circumstances of how she was found.
