CAMBRIDGE, Vt. (AP) - A Massachusetts trucker who blocked traffic for more than an hour on a winding Vermont mountain road has been fined $2,000 for ignoring numerous signs that say trucks are prohibited on the road known as Smugglers Notch.
Vermont State Police were called at about 3:30 p.m. Monday after receiving a report of a tractor trailer stuck in tight S-curves near the top of state Route 108, a summer shortcut between Cambridge and Stowe.
Traffic was blocked while the driver reversed his 53-foot trailer down the roadway to an area where he could turn around.
On July 1 the state authorized fines of up to $2,000 for truckers who ignore signs that prohibit trucks and drive their rigs into the notch and block traffic.
