COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - The director of a citizen watchdog group is discussing a book he wrote about the FBI’s 1990 operation into Statehouse corruption and the ethics issues that persist in South Carolina.
John Crangle of Common Cause is to make a presentation on his book, “Operation Lost Trust and the Ethics Reform Movement,” at Timrod Library in Summerville at 3 p.m. Friday. The FBI’s investigation resulted in 27 convictions or guilty pleas of state legislators and lobbyists on charges including bribery, extortion, and obstruction of justice.
The Legislature passed ethics laws in the operation’s wake but left plenty of loopholes.
Crangle’s book, released earlier this year, is based partly on his Statehouse experiences while pushing for ethics reform since 1986. He says he also spent three years interviewing people for the book.
