CHESAPEAKE, Va. (AP) - Workers are getting ready to break ground on an expansion of the Chesapeake jail.

The Virginian-Pilot reports (https://bit.ly/2bZmFrK ) that the city will break ground Monday on the 47,282 square-foot building that will stand adjacent to the existing jail and house 192 inmates.

The building will house inmates who are considered a low-security risk as well as those who work outside the jail. It will also serve as home for the jail’s re-entry and educational programs.

The jail has been using three temporary buildings to address overcrowding. But the jail’s permit for the temporary buildings expires in March 2018.

The $29 million project is expected to be completed in February.
