TRENTON, Mich. (AP) - Construction is taking place on a project that will bring a dock and a fishing pier to the Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge.

Officials say construction started in December and all underwater substructure work for building the breakwater and fishing pier will be completed by March 15 at the Refuge Gateway in Trenton. The full project is scheduled to wrap up in December 2016.

Those involved in the project announced Friday that the Downriver Community Conference has awarded the construction contract to E.C. Korneffel Co.

Wayne County, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and others worked for nearly a decade on restoration of the Refuge Gateway. Located on the river’s Trenton Channel, it was the site of a Chrysler manufacturing facility that was deactivated in 1990
