PORTSMOUTH, N.H. (AP) - Portsmouth City Council has pushed forward a proposal to create a “Transportation Corridor District” through the southeastern New Hampshire city.

The Portsmouth Herald reports (https://bit.ly/24IU42j ) councilors unanimously voted on Monday to allow City Manager John Bohenko to bring back the proposed rezoning that would establish the district at the May 16 city council meeting.

City Planning Director Rick Taintor says Portsmouth would use “railroad right of ways within the city” to create the transportation corridor if the rezoning is approved.

Officials say the new district was proposed to create multi-use recreational trails along abandoned rail corridors, which will be preserved for “existing and future transportation uses.”

Taintor says the project is based on a similar district the town of Hampton developed along the former Eastern Line rail corridor in 2012.
