BOSTON (AP) - A coalition of civil rights lawyers says cancellations of trains on a Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority commuter rail line disproportionately affect minority and low-income residents.
The Boston Globe reports (https://bit.ly/2f3IfhZ ) the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights and Economic Justice on Tuesday asked federal prosecutors to investigate recent cancellations on Boston’s Fairmount Line.
The line runs through Mattapan, Roxbury and Dorchester, where many minority and low-income riders live.
The coalition says the cancellations steer resources away from those communities and toward wealthier and less-diverse areas.
The MBTA says the line is one of its most reliable, with an on-time performance above 96 percent over the last month.
The agency also says federal transit investigators in August determined the cancellation of late-night weekend service didn’t violate the Civil Rights Act.
