A Redskins’ squad plagued by interceptions, overthrows and miscues lost to the Cowboys 27-23 Sunday at FedEx Field.
A crisp start to the fourth quarter by Washington was squandered after a dubious decision — then lost in the fog of the Redskins’ end-of-game ineptitude.
Washington was poised to pad its lead after Kirk Cousins delivered a deep, and underthrown, pass to rookie wide receiver Josh Doctson for a 57-yard gain. The Redskins worked their way to a first-and-goal situation from the 6-yard line. Production in the red zone had been troubling all day for the Redskins. The errors in that space hit their nadir when Cousins was easily intercepted by Dallas safety Barry Church in the end zone on third-and-goal.
The Cowboys flipped that turnover into another long drive, this one 11 plays and 80 yards, before a go-ahead touchdown from former Redskins running back Alfred Morris. Dallas took a 27-23 lead with 4:45 to play.
The Redskins stalled when trying to answer. Cousins’ throw to Pierre Garcon on fourth-and-1 from the Washington 43-yard line with 2:00 to play was incomplete. The pass was late and behind Garcon.
Dallas took over on downs before being forced to punt. In the Redskins’ final possession, a final deep throw into the end zone by Cousins was too far as time expired. Washington fell to 0-2 and now faces an early-season dire circumstance of going to New York next week to face the 2-0 Giants.
