New Technology Management Inc. is one of the nation's fastest-growing information technology companies, with $25 million in revenues, more than 90 percent of which comes from the federal government.

The primary goals of the Winchester, Va.-based company, said founder and President Lurita Doan, is to help "the people that protect our country" and to respond to the government's changing technology needs.

NTMI inked its first contract seven years ago with the Department of the Navy providing Unix systems support.

Because of NTMI's swift rise in technology contracting, the company has made its way onto Deloitte & Touche's "Fast 500" Program, a ranking of the 500 fastest-growing U.S. technology companies.

Winning that first contract was no easy task, said Ms. Doan, who started the company with an initial investment of just $100 for home office supplies.

"Grueling is the only way to describe the first three years," said Ms. Doan, who began to lose hope. She said some potential clients seemed taken aback when they noticed she was expecting a baby.

"By my eight month, all my business had dropped," she said.

Ms. Doan had been working on small projects such as providing support for the Business Executives for National Security, a local nonprofit. She did the installation, configuration, training, programming, and even hardware disposal for the organization.

After working solo for three years from 1990-93, trying to solicit integration and maintenance assistance for the government's Unix systems, Ms. Doan won a $100 million procurement contract with the Navy, conveniently just days before giving birth to her second child.

"That was the big break that I needed," Ms. Doan said.

The systems maintenance for the Navy led to other government contracts, and to the hiring of her first three employees. NTMI is up to 143 employees this year.

Ms. Doan, an energetic businesswoman, said 10 years of perseverance, a loyal staff, and the somewhat blind faith of the government, all have contributed to the company's success.

One of her most recent contracts involves providing non-intrusive inspection devices and remote data transfer technologies for U.S. Customs Service officials monitoring the southern border.

NTMI also has been helping its government clients integrate Microsoft NT.

Apart from its work as a systems integrator, NTMI develops software, conducts network analysis and design and offers hardware maintenance, repair and sales.

Ms. Doan opened NTMI for business on Halloween Day in 1990, which she said was a scary time. "Sometimes, they (potential clients) would give me 17 minutes and show me the door," she explained with some laughter.

Other times, she would get small jobs fixing small glitches in government systems or jobs like the one with BENS.

Now, her projects go beyond mere fixing of glitches and involve full technology integration. The company, for instance, has installed and maintained a help desk for the Department of Agriculture.

Over the years, Ms. Doan has developed a company philosophy: "We just want to do a good job in a bleeding-edge field," she said.

Apart from the Winchester location, NTMI has offices in St. Louis, New Orleans, Atlanta, Sierra Vista, Ariz., and Oakton, Va.

Ms. Doan, who has cross-trained her employees, often has them travel to work on different projects around the country.

However, her office culture is relaxed. If the work is done she doesn't keep her employees in the office. And sometimes she takes employees to baseball games or bowling.

She said her entrepreneurial spirit is inherited. Her great-grandmother started her own business selling pralines early in the morning on the docks of New Orleans in the 1860s. Then her grandmother opened a secretarial-training school and managed other large investments. Even her father ran his own insurance company.

The only real difference between being an entrepreneur then and now is that, these days, there is little family time, Ms. Doan said.
