In one of the Washington area's most exclusive settings, two miles from the western interchange of routes 50 and 301, sits a five-bedroom, five-bath home on a 2-acre lot in the Federal Hill Farm community of Bowie.

The eye-catching exterior only hints of the spaciousness and elegance inside. From the street, the house beckons visitors with its stately Colonial all-brick construction and four columns at the front entry. The wooded lot serves as a backdrop to professional landscaping and potted flowers that accent the front lawn.

Federal Hill Farm has large custom-built homes on multiple-acre lots. Just about all 35 homes in the community have large front yards and lengthy driveways.

Visitors take a long driveway to a circle in front of 16905 Federal Hill Court, now on the market for $669,900. The three-car side-entry garage, along with space for several other cars, can be accessed from the circular entry. The homeowner is a businessman who had the 5,800-square-foot house built in 1996. He is now building another home.

The interior has an open floor plan showcasing the living room and dining room combined with tall ceilings and decorative columns. The green and white marble floor in the foyer adds to the elegance.

Bright windows are plentiful on the first floor. Crown molding and off-white carpet can be found throughout most of the rooms on this level.

At the front of the home is a room that can be used as an office, library or even an extra bedroom. This room has an adjoining bathroom with a pedestal sink and shower. The green bathroom fixtures go well with the white and green diamond splashed ceramic tile flooring.

An arched entryway leads from the oversized living room into the formal dining room. The dining room features chair-rail molding and a bay window that provides a wonderful view of the large back yard. Both rooms have green window treatments.

There is also a laundry/mud room on the main level with a Whirlpool washer and dryer and a guest closet.

The kitchen has an abundance of cabinets and counter space. Black marble counters compliment the white cabinets and give the kitchen a lavish look. Space above the cabinets would be put to good use displaying decorations.

The kitchen also offers a center island, an Amana cooktop, Whirlpool refrigerator, a dishwasher and double oven. Gleaming hardwood covers the floor. The breakfast area has French doors that lead to a deck.

The open floor plan continues in the back of the home with only a railing separating the kitchen from the step-down family room. The family room has a fireplace with marble surround and hearth, and wooden plantation blinds on the windows give it a country feel. An adjoining large sunroom with a cathedral ceiling completes the back of the home.

The homeowners take advantage of the bright sunroom by using it to showcase their many plants. Other features of this sunroom include skylights, ceramic tile, a ceiling fan and another set of French doors, in addition to the pair in the kitchen, which also lead to the deck.

A wide oak stairway with white spindles leads to the upper level. A set of double doors at the top of the stairs is the entrance to the master suite. This room has a sitting area for late-night reading or for gazing out of the large windows.

The bedroom has a tray ceiling with a fan and a walk-in closet large enough to be a room of its own.

Another set of double doors in the master bedroom open to the master bath. A step-up two-Jacuzzi tub is the highlight of the bathroom. On one side of the tub is a stand-up shower, and on the other side is a small room with a door to the commode.

Across the bathroom are his-and-hers vanities. Stylish ceramic tile decorates the floor.

The remaining three bedrooms each have double-door closets. One room has its own private bath with ceramic tile. The homeowners have young twins whose rooms were decorated to reflect their interest and style. One of the rooms facing the front of the home has a worldly space decor complete with a space border, painted clouds and astronauts. The other child's room is decorated in brilliant primary colors. In the hallway are a full bath with double vanities and a separate commode and shower area.

As if the first two levels weren't enough, the house has a finished basement with three separate areas, including a flowing recreation room. Although the basement is large, it still offers a warm and inviting atmosphere.

In the recreation area is a floor-to-ceiling gray and beige stone fireplace with a wood-stove insert.

The room also has a wet bar with a black marble counter and glass shelves.

Overnight guests or live-in help could enjoy a private bedroom in the basement with an adjoining full bath and walk-in closet. Green carpet and ceramic tile covers the basement floor. The remaining space in the basement is used for storage and a utility room.

Outside, this home offers a retreat from a hard day's work. A set of French doors and sliding glass doors from the basement lead to an all-brick patio in the back yard surrounded by flower bushes. Stairs from the patio head to a big deck overlooking the roaming manicured lawn and woods. Children can have fun on the custom-built play set in the back yard.

Other highlights that make this home modern and comfortable include a central vacuum, an alarm, a sprinkler system, a humidifier and a water filtration system.
