DETROIT (AP) — Here are the top three vehicles, ranked by quality, in their individual market segments, according to the J.D. Power and Associates 2003 initial-quality study.

The study is based on responses from more than 52,000 people who bought or leased new 2003 cars and trucks. The survey is done in the first 90 days of ownership.


Compact car: Toyota Prius, Toyota Corolla, Mitsubishi Lancer and Toyota Echo (tie.)

Entry midsize car: Chevrolet Malibu, Hyundai Sonata, Pontiac Grand Am.

Premium midsize car: Mercury Sable, Chevrolet Impala, Buick Regal and Chevy Monte Carlo (tie.)

Full-size car: Ford Crown Victoria, Buick LeSabre, Pontiac Bonneville.

Entry luxury car: Lexus ES 300, Cadillac CTS, Acura TL.

Midlevel luxury car: Lexus GS 300/430, Volvo S80, Cadillac DeVille.

Premium luxury car: Lexus LS 430, Lexus SC 430, Mercedes-Benz SL-Class.

Sporty car: Mazda Miata, Chrysler Sebring Coupe, Dodge Stratus Coupe.

Premium sports car: Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class, BMW Z4, Honda S2000.

Light trucks

Compact pickup: Mazda B-series, Ford Ranger, Subaru Baja.

Full-size pickup: Ford F-Series LD, Chevrolet Silverado LD, Dodge Ram HD.

Entry sport utility vehicle: Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV4, Mitsubishi Outlander.

Midsize SUV: Toyota Highlander, Nissan Murano, Toyota 4Runner.

Full-size SUV:Chevrolet Suburban, Chevrolet Tahoe, GMC Yukon.

Luxury SUV:Lexus RX 300, Lexus LX 470, Infiniti QX4.

Compact van: Oldsmobile Silhouette, Toyota Sienna, Dodge Caravan/Grand Caravan.
