The Washington Redskins plan to add 6,000 seats to FedEx Field, already the NFL’s largest stadium, if the NFL awards the Super Bowl to Washington in 2008.
Redskins owner Daniel Snyder will present the team’s formal bid to play host to Super Bowl XLII to NFL owners later this week and again during an owners’ meeting Oct.29-30 in Chicago. At that time he will discuss the plans to enlarge the 86,484-seat facility. The proposed new seats would be mostly under cover, roughly located at the back of sections 114-129, opposite the side of the field where Snyder has his luxury box.
The team has begun marketing the potential seats in ads in national magazines and on the team’s Web site, Redskins.com, in an effort to entice fans to join the already-massive waiting list for season tickets.
“Right now, this effort is contingent on getting the Super Bowl,” said Redskins spokesman Karl Swanson. “But the Super Bowl is always a balancing act to make sure everybody has enough tickets. This obviously would help that.”
The NFL distributes Super Bowl tickets to every team each year using a complex, percentage-based formula. But aside from Super Bowls XI, XIV, XVII, XX and XXVII, held in the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Calif, a college facility, no Super Bowl has been held in a stadium larger than an enlarged FedEx Field.
The Redskins, along with the New York Giants, are seeking to stage the first Super Bowl held outdoors in a cold-weather city. A decision on the Super Bowl XLII host likely will be made at the owners’ meeting next month, and Washington and Phoenix are seen as front-runners. By 2008, the Arizona Cardinals are scheduled to have a new stadium open, and Phoenix played host to Super Bowl XXX, making it a formidable competitor. Tampa, which played host to Super Bowl XXXV, also seeks the game.
Swanson did not specify a potential cost for the seat additions, but said the effort “would pay for itself.”
