Prince George’s County fire officials yesterday charged a man with impersonating a fire investigator after an incident Monday at a Lanham school. Witnesses said the man resembled a sketch of the man sought in 36 incidents of arson, most in Prince George’s County and the District, in the past year.
Prince George’s County Fire Chief Ron Blackwell said last night that the 33-year-old suspect was arrested about noon at an apartment complex in Riverdale Heights as he was getting into a white Volvo. The car matched the description of the one seen Monday at Magnolia Elementary School, where a man asking for information was turned away by school officials. Chief Blackwell said tips from the public led investigators to the Volvo.
Chief Blackwell agreed that the man resembles the sketch of the serial arsonist but stressed that the charges for now relate only to Monday’s incident. The man was held overnight pending a court appearance today.
