BOSTON (AP) — Derek Lowe will skip a turn so everyone else in the Boston Red Sox rotation can stay on schedule.
A second consecutive rainout last night forced the Red Sox to reschedule Lowe’s start for Sunday. Lowe originally was scheduled to pitch Tuesday before that game was called off. He last pitched April7, so he will have 10 days’ rest between starts.
“I feel like I’ll be stealing money. I haven’t done anything,” he said. “I definitely feel strange. … I can’t remember the last time I had 10 days between starts.”
Sidney Ponson, who had been slated to start for Baltimore, will pitch today against Pedro Martinez on Martinez’s regular day.
Also yesterday, Red Sox center fielder Johnny Damon said the swelling in his knee has gone down and he would have been able to play if the game hadn’t been postponed. Even though the rain appeared to have let up an hour before game time yesterday, the field was soaked from two days of heavy rains.
“It’s awful,” Red Sox manager Terry Francona said. “I ran in through the outfield, came in here and told the guys there was a possibility we may get rained out again.”
