WEST VIRGINIA

Thursday: The Bull Run Civil War Round Table will hear James P. Gannon, a historian and former editor at the Wall Street Journal, speak on “The Irish in the Confederacy,” 7:15 p.m. at the Centreville Regional Library, 14200 St. Germain Drive. Free and open to the public. Phone 703/675-0702.

April 14: The Harpers Ferry Civil War Round Table will hear Robert Hodge talk about the Central Virginia Battlefield Trust’s efforts to preserve local battlefields, 8 p.m. at the Camp Hill Methodist Church at the corner of Washington and Gilmore streets, Harpers Ferry. Free and open to the public.

Monday: The Capitol Hill Civil War Round Table will hear Edwin C. Bearss, historian emeritus of the National Park Service, discuss “Sherman’s Atlanta Campaign From Ringgold, Ga., to the Crossing of the Chattahoochee,” Room 1302, Longworth House Office Building, Independence and New Jersey avenues SE. Today and tomorrow: Museum Discovery Weekend at Monocacy National Battlefield, Frederick. Soldiers in camp, cooking demonstrations. April 24 and May 22: Historic Surratt House Museum, 9118 Brandywine Road, Clinton, is offering tours of the John Wilkes Booth escape routes. Participants will leave Surratt House Museum at 7:30 a.m. on an air-conditioned coach bus. This trip in time from Ford’s Theatre to the site of Garrett’s farm takes about 12 hours and is narrated by an expert on the Lincoln assassination.
