The Washington Redskins quietly released center Larry Moore on Friday to make room for extra undrafted free agents.
The cut wasn’t unexpected, because the Redskins’ signing of Cory Raymer and re-signing of Lennie Friedman seemed to signal Moore’s departure. Also, Moore was in the last year of his contract, and Washington saved $1.3million against the salary cap by cutting him.
The club still hadn’t announced the release as of last night, but it was on the league’s waiver wire and vice president of football operations Vinny Cerrato confirmed it. The Redskins also cut punter David Leaverton on Friday in anticipation of signing 10 undrafted rookies.
Moore didn’t remain on the market for long. Cerrato said he was signed by the Cincinnati Bengals, who are coached by former Redskins defensive coordinator Marvin Lewis.
“[The cuts timing] was so we could sign some undrafted guys and to give Larry a better chance to find someplace to play,” Cerrato said. “It worked out well for both parties.”
The Redskins signed Moore in 2002, and he started all 16 games at center. He started only eight games last season because of a badly sprained foot, and Friedman was effective as his replacement.
Washington also is expected to release linebacker Jeremiah Trotter after June1. The cap savings from that move will create room to sign draft picks.
