Maryland assistant basketball coach Dave Dickerson was named Tulane’s coach yesterday.

Dickerson spent nine seasons as an assistant to Gary Williams after playing for Maryland from 1986 to 1989.

Dickerson is the second Maryland assistant to leave in the last five weeks. Mike Lonergan was named Vermont’s coach in late February.

?If I had to pick a perfect job for me it would be a school with a profile like Tulane — a great academic institution in a great city with the potential for tremendous athletic success,? Dickerson said.

Dickerson was instrumental in recruiting several of Maryland’s leading players in recent years, including Steve Francis, Juan Dixon, Steve Blake and Chris Wilcox. The Terrapins could promote first-year assistant Keith Booth, but they are expected to hire two more coaches to oversee recruiting.
