Kathryn George Frost, a retired Army major general who served on the White House staffs of two presidents, died of breast cancer Aug. 18 in her hometown of Latta, S.C. She was 57.
When she retired from the Army last year after a 31-year career, Gen. Frost was the highest-ranking woman in the Army.
Before retirement, Gen. Frost was commander of the Army and Air Force Exchange Service (AAFES). AAFES is an $8 billion retail service that operates 3,100 facilities — including fast-food restaurants and movie theaters — on military bases throughout the world, including Afghanistan and Iraq.
Before becoming AAFES commander, Gen. Frost served four years as the Army adjutant general and commander of the eastern sector of the Military Entrance Processing Command.
She worked as a social aide for Presidents Reagan and George H.W. Bush.
Gen. Frost had been battling cancer for four years and moved from Dallas to the District last year while she was undergoing treatment at Walter Reed Army Medical Center.
She held a bachelor’s degree in education from the University of South Carolina and a master’s degree in counseling from Wayne State University.
She earned numerous awards during her career, including the Distinguished Service Medal, the Defense Superior Medal, the Legion of Merit and the Army Commendation Award.
She was married for eight years to Martin Frost, a former Democratic congressman from Texas.
Burial will be at Arlington National Cemetery.
