A day ahead of the league’s Tuesday 5 p.m. deadline, the Redskins cut 12 players this morning. They have 76 players on their roster.

The list: OL Jon Alston, QB Casey Bramlet, S Antuan Edwards, TE Robert Johnson, OL Jim Jones, K Tyler Jones, P David Lonie, DL Chris Mineo, TE Calen Powell, DL Karon Riley, LB Kevin Simon, DB Aric Williams.

What these cuts mean: That John Hall has won the place-kicking job, that Derrick Frost will have some company in camp to win the punting job, that the Redskins became fed up with Robert Johnson not staying healthy and seventh-round draft pick Kevin Simon being unable to play the entire preseason because of an abdomen injury.

Now, to review the Patriots game. Been trying to come up with a catchy name for my Monday dispatches. Have nothing just yet.

• Before you ask, it was just as pathetic to watch in person as it was on television. At least if you were watching at home, you got to turn the channel. It looked like the Redskins played hard, just not well.

• It’s hard to believe Joe Gibbs was encouraged by the play of quarterback Mark Brunell. But now in Year 3 of Gibbs Version 2.0, some things never change: Joe sends in a lot of bad calls to the league office, often says after a loss, “It starts with me and we’re in this together” and defends No. 8 like he’s a member of the family.

• Something needs to happen at the punter position and pronto. Derrick Frost has had enough chances.

• I can’t wait to hear Gregg Williams’ take on why the middle of the field was so wide open for New England TE Ben Watson. Was anybody communicating out there?

• Finally, a non-football note: Gillette Stadium is near the top of my list of favorite stadiums. And it’s No. 1 on my list in the music area. Bands/groups heard throughout the game: Rolling Stones, Stone Temple Pilots, AC/DC, Guns ’N Roses, Bon Jovi, Soundgarden, Black Crowes, Led Zeppelin, Ozzy Osbourne, Bush, Beastie Boyz, Motley Crue — an incredible selection. A lot better than hearing a marching band during timeouts at FedEx Field.

That’s all for now.
