Kevin Mitchell, the Washington Redskins’ starting middle linebacker in 2001, was found dead yesterday morning in his Ashburn home. Mitchell, 36, played for Washington from 2001 to 2003 after four seasons with San Francisco and two with New Orleans.

Loudoun County Sheriff’s spokesman Kraig Troxell said Mitchell died of natural causes.

“I was back at Redskin Park for the first time in a while today and to be hit with that news sent chills down my spine and my arms,” said Lemar Marshall, the only remaining Washington linebacker who played with Mitchell. “I had talked to Kevin pretty recently. He was doing fine. He was a great guy and a real family man.”

Longtime receptionist B.J. Blanchard choked up talking about Mitchell. Redskins owner Dan Snyder issued a statement in which he said Mitchell was “was one of the first players I bonded with. Anyone who knew him was touched by his smile, joy for life and love of his family.”
