Jet lag can play tricks on the mind, and certainly Monday’s cross-country flight followed by a West Coast night game left this reporter a little light-headed. So forgive him for experiencing a jolt when he walked into the stadium at 3 p.m. yesterday and saw a ballgame already underway. Was this a time zone mishap and the Nationals and Padres were playing four hours before they were supposed to? No, thankfully it was only a mid-afternoon college game between noted local powers UC San Diego and Point Loma Nazarene University. The Sea Lions and Tritons got a chance to play in the big boys’ stadium, which surely was a thrill for those kids. Next time, though, they might want to let the visiting writers know in advance so no one else experiences the sheer panic of thinking they overslept.

OVERHEARD

“It had nothing to do with being [mad] at him. That [stuff] hurt. I know Peavy’s not that kind of guy.”

— Ryan Church on slamming his bat down after getting hit by a Jake Peavy pitch in the fourth inning of Monday’s night’s game

TONIGHT’S GAME

Nationals LHP Matt Chico (2-2, 5.70) vs. Padres RHP Clay Hensley (1-3, 7.86), 10:05 p.m., MASN, AM-1500, FM-107.7.
