AUGUSTA, GA. — The Masters cemented its status as home to the greatest media center on the planet yesterday when the media were served shrimp and grits with andouille sausage for lunch. Many of the uninitiated (including columnist Dan Daly of The Washington Times) scoffed at the Southern specialty. As a native of Chattanooga, Tenn., the Rover has long revered the sublime culinary combo. Because of its rarity, shrimp and grits is locked in a dead heat with prime rib, tenderloin and various other incarnations of cow at the very top of the Rover’s food chain. In fact, the Rover was so moved by the choice and execution of the menu selection that he enjoyed four helpings and then insisted upon hugging the chef.
In case you missed it, the Golf Channel’s Kelly Tilghman caddied for Arnold Palmer (who helped found the network) during Wednesday’s Par 3 contest in a thinly veiled attempt to create some warm and fuzzies among golf fans for Tilghman, who earlier this season was suspended for suggesting that perhaps the only way to stop Tiger Woods’ dominance would be for players to lynch him in a back alley. Memo to the Golf Channel: There’s nothing soft and lovable about the brassy Tilghman, though the Rover bets she felt comfy in the manly caddie duds.
