By Jessica Lazzara, age 14

Swaying in the wind

It casts a shadow over the hot sand

Tall and skinny

It stands sturdy and strong

Watching over the calm, blue ocean

The wind picks up

The waves crash on the shore

The sky goes dark

Rain pelts down and the shadow disappears

The thick green leaves swirl around

Barely holding onto the tree

Lightning strikes the sand

Traveling up the trunk

The tree falls to the ground

Shaking the sand

Defeat hangs in the air

The protector is gone

The waters calm and

Life moves on.
