The Washington Redskins conducted their annual workout for local college prospects yesterday at Redskin Park.

Sixty-nine draft-eligible players who attended high school or college in the D.C. metropolitan area went through combine-style testing and drills for the Redskins’ personnel department and coaching staff.

Maryland (12 players) had the most representatives, including Lance Ball, Carlos Feliciano, Isiah Gardner, Erin Henderson and Keon Lattimore.

Last year, locals Stephon Heyer, Sam Hollenbach, Marcus Mason and Byron Westbrook earned training camp invitations after the local workout. Heyer started five games on the Redskins’ offensive line.

•The Redskins also signed receiver/kick returner Jerome Mathis. A Pro Bowl return man his rookie season in 2005 with the Houston Texans, injuries have limited him to five games the last two seasons. Mathis was released by the Texans in February after he was arrested on charges of assaulting his pregnant common-law wife.

•The entire Washington Redskins team is one of five finalists for the Halas Award given each year by the Pro Football Writers of America for courage and perseverance in overcoming obstacles. The Redskins were recognized for their 4-1 run to the playoffs after the shooting death of Pro Bowl safety Sean Taylor in November.
