Weekend Rewind - In Case You Missed It
Capitals win Southeast Division: For the first time since before the lockout, the Caps are in the Stanley Cup playoffs. The big winner might be the NHL itself, which finally gets Sidney Crosby and Alex Ovechkin playing in the playoffs at the same time. But more importantly, does this mean Washington is officially a hockey town again? It is for now, but that could change if Flyers fans take up half of Verizon Center this week.
Blowouts in Final Four: There are few nights better in sports than a Final Four semifinal Saturday night featuring two dramatic games. And there are few things worse than a pair of blowouts. The only team capable of giving Memphis a game at this point might be in the NBA. Well, except the Knicks.
TWT FIVE - WHY THE NHL HAS THE BEST PRO PLAYOFFS
1. Fewer days off: You rarely will find more than one day off between games in a series. In the time it takes to finish an NBA playoff series, Dikembe Mutombo ages another five years.
2. More tradition: The Stanley Cup Finals have been in existence since before 1900, longer than the World Series (1903), NBA Finals (1947) or Super Bowl (1967).
3. Less hype: By the time the Super Bowl, NBA Finals or World Series comes around, there’s nothing you don’t know about a single player.
4. Sudden-death overtime: There’s nothing more dramatic than a Game 7 overtime goal ” not a walk-off home run, game-winning field goal (yawn) or buzzer-beating shot.
5. Better trophy: You don’t see players drinking alcohol out of the Lombardi Trophy, do you?
