The Rover is delighted to report that this year’s Ryder Cup captains are again playing nice. U.S. captain Paul Azinger, whom the London Mail quoted over the weekend referring to Euro boss Nick Faldo as a part of the male anatomy, said his comments were misconstrued. And Faldo, on hand at the Masters as a three-time champion, said yesterday there was no need for an apology.
“I’ve talked to Paul since then, and there’s absolutely no beef between us at all,” Faldo said. “We get on very well, and I wouldn’t be surprised if after the Ryder Cup we end up fishing together down there [in Louisville] somewhere.” …
After sampling a bit of Arnold Palmer’s cabernet Monday night, the Rover would have to give the vino-a-vino golf world wino title to Greg Norman’s line. Perhaps the contest might have been closer had it not been a Palmer from 2004, the year Arnie missed the Masters cut by 20 strokes — clearly not vintage King. …
Tiger Woods, who told an Irish Times correspondent that he hasn’t been intimidated on a golf course since he played in the Junior World Championships as an 11-year-old, provided the quote of the day:
“No, [that was the last time]. I don’t remember his name, but this 12-year-old drove a par-4. You don’t see 12-year-olds hitting it over 300 yards too often.”
