L’AQUILA, ITALY (AP) - Earthquake survivors are gathering in a mess tent that has been transformed into a makeshift church for Easter Sunday Mass.

Brown-robed Capuchin monks helped move out dining tables and set up rows of chairs for the Mass, while rescue workers handed out traditional dove-shaped Easter cake to survivors of Monday’s devastating quake.

The mood was somber as the faithful _ mostly elderly people _ filed into the tent. Survivor Corrado Mongelli said for him this Easter marks the resurrection for the quake survivors, too, “because we are starting from zero.”

The death toll from Monday’s quake is at 293, with more than 40,000 people displaced and thousands of buildings destroyed.
