WASHINGTON (AP) - A US intelligence official says the American captain who had been held hostage by Somali pirates has been freed.

The official says Capt. Richard Phillips is safe on a U.S. Navy ship, and 3 of the pirates who were holding him were killed. One pirate is in U.S. custody.
