DENVER (AP) - The Colorado Avalanche relieved general manager Francois Giguere of his duties after the team finished last in the Western Conference.

President Pierre Lacroix called the season “unacceptable.” He will oversee the Avalanche until a replacement is named.

It’s the first time the team has finished in the cellar of the conference since the franchise relocated to Denver in 1995. The Avalanche finished 32-45-5 and were 28th in the league, in front of only the New York Islanders and Tampa Bay.

Giguere was named executive vice president and GM of the team on May 24, 2006.
