BOSTON (AP) - Boston College has extended athletic director Gene DeFilippo’s contract two years through May 2014.

School president William Leahy said in a statement Monday that DeFilippo (DEE’-fill-IPP’-oh) has provided “tremendous leadership and vision.”

DeFilippo, who first came to Boston College in 1997, fostered the athletic department’s transition from the Big East to the Atlantic Coast Conference. The university says he has strengthened academic support, facilities and fund raising.

Donations to BC athletics grew to $21 million in 2008, a 200 percent increase from 2003.

The Jesuit school also consistently has one of the top student-athlete graduation rates in the nation.

DeFilippo says he’s “extremely fortunate.”
