WASHINGTON (AP) - A jury says a retired U.S. Navy commander is not guilty of mail fraud but it is considering other charges against him and his wife in an alleged theft from a fund for victims of the Sept. 11 terror attacks.

After five days of deliberations, jurors reported Wednesday that Charles Coughlin was not guilty of some charges and they could not agree on others. U.S. District Judge Henry Kennedy ordered jurors to resume deliberations on other charges against Coughlin and his wife, Sabrina.

The Coughlins are accused of stealing more that $300,000 from the 9-11 victims compensation fund. Prosecutors say the couple filed a false claim for the timing of an injury to Charles Coughlin’s neck. Prosecutors say he actually sustained the injury three years earlier while making home repairs.
