SAO PAULO (AP) - Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva says he won’t run for president again in 2014.

Silva says it is “silly to imagine that in four years (I) would return.”

The president ends his second consecutive term in 2010 and would not be eligible to run again until 2014.

The highly popular leader told Radio Globo on Wednesday that he needs to be thankful for his eight years in office, and he hopes his successor will achieve more than he did.

Silva also said he hopes one day the poor will gain the social status of the “blue-eyed people … responsible for the economic crisis.”

The remark echoed a comment from earlier this month, when he said the crisis was “created by white people with blue eyes.”
