DES MOINES, IOWA (AP) - American distance star Alan Webb will open his outdoor season by running the mile at next week’s Drake Relays in Des Moines.

Webb broke the Relays record in the event in 2007, finishing in 3:51.71 to break Steve Scott’s mark by nearly five seconds.

Webb, who set the American record in the mile at 3:46.91 in Belgium in 2007, finished fifth in the 1,500 meters in the 2008 U.S. Olympic Trials.

Webb became the first U.S. high school runner to break the 4-minute mark in the mile in 2001.
