LONG BEACH, CALIF. (AP) - Police say a hospital worker has shot and killed two employees and then killed himself at a Southern California medical center. Police say the suspect, 50-year-old Mario Ramirez of Alhambra, died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound at Long Beach Memorial Medical Center.

Investigators say 46-year-old Hugo Bustamante of Cypress died at the scene and 56-year-old Kelly Hales of Redondo Beach was taken to the hospital’s emergency room in critical condition. Hales died several hours later from injuries suffered in the shooting.

Police say the three men worked at the hospital, which was locked down after the shooting.

Police Chief Anthony Batts says Ramirez’s motive remains under investigation, but he notes the violence came amid a flurry of recent shootings in the nation.
