GUSTINE, CALIF. (AP) - Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger is joining thousands of demonstrators on the final leg of a four-day march aimed at drawing attention to rural job losses caused by water shortages in California’s agricultural basin.
The governor told farmworkers and farmers he would do all he could to bring more water to San Joaquin Valley farms this season. He says the state can only stem local unemployment by modernizing an antiquated water system.
California farmers have left large swaths of land unplanted because of a three-year drought and the accompanying restrictions on water use.
Hundreds of participants wore blue so that from the air they would look like a river.
