WEST HARTFORD, CONN. (AP) - A Connecticut crew member of a cargo ship attacked by pirates says he won’t return to the shipping lanes off Somalia.
West Hartford resident ATM “Zahid” Reza (ay-tee-EM’ zah-HEED’ REE’-zuh) returned home to his wife and 6-year-old son Friday afternoon. He was greeted by neighbors holding welcome home signs.
Reza says he was steering the Maersk Alabama while it carried humanitarian supplies when it was attacked by pirates, who were on the ship’s bridge before he could hide. He says he stabbed one of the pirates with a knife, not an ice pick, as had earlier been reported.
Reza told reporters outside his home he’s not sure whether he’ll continue to be a Merchant Marine. But he says he’s never making another trip to that region because it’s too dangerous.
