ROSWELL, GA. (AP) - Police fatally shot a man Friday suspected of kidnapping his ex-girlfriend’s two children after he tried to run over an officer with his car, authorities said.

Police in the northern Atlanta suburb of Roswell said they caught up with Jairo Bustos, 25, on a parking lot after a motorist saw an Amber Alert describing the car and called authorities.

Bustos was wanted on three counts of kidnapping and one count of hijacking a motor vehicle, said Gwinnett County Police spokeswoman Cpl. Illana Spellman.

Police found the missing 9-month-old and 22-month-old children unharmed but provided no other details. It was not immediately clear if they were in the car when Bustos was shot.

Police also were unsure if they were the suspect’s children.

The children’s mother, Adrian Stearns, 22, called police Thursday to say Bustos had taken off with them in her car. Bustos had recently been evicted from Stearns’ apartment.

Spellman said the children have been reunited with their mother.

Spellman said Bustos and Stearns had broken up a week ago. Stearns told police she was in her car running errands with him Thursday afternoon when Bustos became upset and began threatening her, Spellman said.

The mother said she jumped out of the car. Bustos drove off with the children and Stearns called 911, Spellman said.
