KNOXVILLE, TENN. (AP) - The Tennessee Valley Authority has asked a federal court to dismiss all lawsuits filed against the utility in the aftermath of a major coal ash spill.

More than 5 million cubic feet of coal ash burst through a retaining wall last December at a plant 40 miles west of Knoxville, damaging or destroying about 40 homes.

The utility filed its request Friday in Knoxville. It says it is making “meaningful progress” on cleanup efforts for which it is responsible. The utility has spent more than $68 million on the cleanup so far.

Seven lawsuits have been brought by residents over the spill at the Kingston Fossil Plant.

Beth Alexander, an attorney for one plaintiff group, says the TVA has delayed taking responsibility for the spill and the suffering it caused.
