LAGOS, NIGERIA (AP) - Police say a Canadian woman has been kidnapped in northern Nigeria.

Kaduna State police spokesman Aminu Lawan says the woman was seized Thursday evening in the city of Kaduna where she had been attending an international conference.

Lawan said Saturday that authorities were investigating, but gave no more details.

While kidnapping for ransom is common in the restive southern Niger Delta oil region, it’s extremely rare in the heavily Muslim northern part of the country. Kidnapping victims in Nigeria are normally released unharmed after a ransom is paid.
